RIMOWA Click & Collect Works—If the Trip Has Slack

A traveller-first account of RIMOWA Click & Collect in the United States, including pickup timing, identification, third-party collection, returns and tax-free limits.

Quick answer

RIMOWA's US FAQ says eligible Click & Collect orders are normally ready within two business-hours of order confirmation, but the ready email—not the estimate—is the signal to travel to the store. Bring government-issued ID and the confirmation; a third-party collector must be named during checkout and carry valid ID. The store holds an order for 10 days, then cancels and refunds it. Returns go back to the collection store and the same card. RIMOWA also states that online pickup orders do not qualify for its in-store tourist tax-free policy.

Wait for the ready-for-pickup message even when the page quotes two hours.
Name any substitute collector during checkout and match the identification exactly.
Collect within 10 days and keep the original payment card available for a return.
Choose a normal in-store sale if a qualifying tourist tax refund is central to the economics.
01Use case

Pickup solves stock anxiety, not a packed itinerary

Click & Collect is most useful when the buyer already knows the model and wants a paid order attached to a named store. It removes the ambiguity of calling about a case that might sell before arrival and avoids leaving a high-value delivery at a hotel desk. The US page describes readiness within two hours of confirmation during business hours, but that is an operating estimate. Payment review, inventory movement or a late order can intervene, so build at least half a day of slack before a flight or train.

The process begins on the regional site. Pickup must appear for the exact product and store; worldwide availability cannot be inferred from the US service. Complete the order with the collector's legal name, a reachable email and telephone number. Save both the order confirmation and the later ready notice. A confirmation proves the order exists, while the ready email means the branch has processed it for handover. Turning up with only the first can produce a long wait and no suitcase.

A traveller with no schedule margin should prefer an ordinary store purchase after a same-day stock call, or arrange delivery to a stable address with enough time for inspection. Pickup is a poor fit for a connection-day dash because the store can sit beyond airport security, opening hours can change and a bulky carton may not fit planned transport. Its virtue is controlled collection; once compressed into a 45-minute window, that control disappears.

  • Place the order only after confirming the store fits the travel route and hours.
  • Allow business-hour processing time beyond the published two-hour expectation.
  • Carry the order email and government identification bearing the entered name.
02At the store

Use the counter as an inspection bay, not a parcel locker

At collection, inspect before signing off and leaving. Confirm the model, colour and product number, roll all four wheels, extend the handle, test the locks without changing the combination prematurely and examine the shell under bright light. Ask staff to note any issue immediately. A boxed suitcase is awkward to reopen in a hotel room, but the collection counter is where replacement stock, order records and staff witnesses are closest together.

If someone else will collect, their details must be entered during checkout under the current instructions and they must present valid government ID. Sending a friend after the fact with a screenshot may fail identity controls designed to protect an expensive order. If plans change, contact the store or Client Services rather than editing the email yourself. The order remains available for 10 days from the confirmation date and time; after that, RIMOWA says it is cancelled and refunded.

Decide what to do with the packaging before arriving. It protects an unused return and documents the condition, yet a full RIMOWA carton can be inconvenient on public transport. Folding, discarding or checking the carton may make later repacking harder. If the case must be used immediately, understand that the return question changes once wheels and shell encounter travel. The cleaner plan is to inspect thoroughly, transport the carton carefully and postpone first use until the choice is settled.

  • Match the case to the order before the store completes the handover.
  • Do not substitute an unnamed collector after checkout without formal approval.
  • Plan transport for both suitcase and packaging before choosing the pickup branch.
03Trade-offs

Convenience can cost the tourist refund

RIMOWA's current US wording is unusually direct: its tax-free policy applies only to qualifying in-store purchases, while online purchases—including delivery and in-store pickup—are ineligible even for foreign visitors. The physical handover does not convert the digital sale into a boutique transaction. Travellers comparing channels should therefore model the final cost, not just local sales tax or the product price. If tourist treatment is available and material, ask the store whether an ordinary counter sale can meet the need instead.

Returns are also more local than the online appearance suggests. The US shipping FAQ says a pickup return must be processed at the store where the item was collected and refunded to the same credit card. That is manageable for a resident and fragile for a visitor already home. Inspect aggressively, keep the card and note the store's opening days before departure. A 30-day merchandise policy offers little comfort when the required counter is an ocean away.

Our verdict: Click & Collect is excellent for securing a familiar case in a city where the buyer has time before and after collection. It is inferior for a tourist who needs a refund scheme, cannot revisit the store or is collecting on departure day. If the product is rare enough to justify those compromises, proceed with a named collector and an inspection plan. For a standard black or silver case, a normal boutique transaction often leaves the traveller with cleaner tax and return options.

  • Model the lost tourist-refund opportunity before selecting pickup at payment.
  • Keep the same credit card accessible until the collection-store return period expires.
  • Prefer a conventional boutique sale when itinerary flexibility is more valuable than reservation certainty.

Frequently asked questions

Is the order ready exactly two hours after payment?
Not necessarily. RIMOWA describes readiness within two hours during business hours, but the buyer should wait for the explicit ready email before travelling to the branch.
How long will the store hold my RIMOWA?
The current US FAQ states 10 days from the date and time of confirmation. An uncollected order is then cancelled and refunded.
Can a foreign visitor claim RIMOWA tax-free pickup?
RIMOWA's US policy says no: online orders, including in-store pickup, are excluded from its tax-free policy even when the customer is visiting from abroad.
