Returning a RIMOWA: The Clock Starts Before You Travel

Current RIMOWA return and exchange rules explained through the decisions that matter: deadline, condition, channel, limited editions and refund timing.

Quick answer

Under RIMOWA's US policy reviewed July 16, 2026, standard products may be returned within 30 days of delivery when complete, unused, undamaged and in the original box; limited editions have a 14-day window; customised tags cannot be returned or exchanged. Online orders use the prepaid UPS route and cannot be handed to a boutique, while store purchases go through stores. A same-product colour exchange may be arranged through Client Services within 30 days, but a different size or collection requires a return and a new order. Inspect first and travel later.

Standard US merchandise has a 30-day window; limited editions have 14 days.
A trip, baggage check or removed packaging can undermine the required unused condition.
Online returns travel through the account and prepaid carrier route, not a boutique counter.
Refund validation is quoted at roughly 10–14 business days before bank processing time.

Unbox as though the case may have to go back

The most expensive return mistake is also the most ordinary: buying a case just before departure, packing it and deciding after the first flight that the size or colour is wrong. RIMOWA's US terms require eligible returns to be complete, unused and undamaged. A baggage tag, wheel wear or fresh aluminium dent gives the inspection team a concrete reason to question that condition. Open the carton carefully, keep every insert and accessory, and test the telescopic handle, wheels, locks and interior without taking the case outside.

Photograph the carton before opening if it arrives crushed, then photograph the product under neutral light. Shipping damage belongs in a prompt delivery report, not in a vague explanation weeks later. Compare the model number on the invoice with the case received, confirm the lock and divider operate, and decide while the original packaging remains intact. RIMOWA asks for the original box and a rigid outer carton on the return journey; discarding either can turn a straightforward label into an improvised packing problem.

Write down two dates: delivery and the last prudent day to initiate the return. The legal deadline is not a sensible shipping target. Carrier closures, account access and travel can consume the final days, while a limited edition runs on a 14-day clock rather than the normal 30. Starting early preserves options if the portal fails or Client Services needs to intervene. Customised luggage tags are a separate dead end: the current policy makes them non-returnable and non-exchangeable, so approve initials and colour with unusual care.

  • Test functions indoors without removing more protection than inspection requires.
  • Save the original branded packaging and the rigid shipping carton separately.
  • Treat the 14-day limited-edition period as an urgent decision window.
02Routing

A return address is not interchangeable with a return process

For a US online order, sign in—or create an account for a guest purchase—declare the return and generate RIMOWA's prepaid UPS label. The brand says it is not liable for a return sent through an alternative carrier, which is a strong reason not to choose a cheaper label or an address found in an old email. Photograph the packed case, the sealed carton and the carrier label. At the UPS acceptance point, obtain a receipt showing the first scan and keep tracking until RIMOWA confirms receipt.

Online merchandise cannot currently be returned to a US RIMOWA store. Store purchases follow a store route instead, while Click & Collect returns must be processed at the collection store under the current wording. Store-to-Web purchases also point back to the store where the order was placed. That fragmentation is inconvenient but clear: identify the transaction type from the invoice, then follow its policy. Do not carry a large carton across town on the assumption that any grooved-logo counter can reverse any order.

Cross-border shipping introduces another limit. The US page says online return shipments are accepted only from the same country or region to which the order was delivered. A visitor who orders to a hotel and flies home may retain a paper right without a practical route to exercise it. When travel is imminent, inspect on delivery and leave enough time for the first carrier scan. If that is impossible, buying from a channel with a usable return path can be worth more than marginal price savings.

  • Use the account-generated prepaid label and retain the carrier acceptance scan.
  • Route store, pickup and Store-to-Web transactions back through their named store.
  • Do not plan to launch an online return from a different delivery country.
03Decision

A colour swap is an exchange; a size swap is two purchases

RIMOWA draws a useful line in its US FAQ. Client Services may arrange an exchange for the same product in another colour within 30 days, subject to the same unused, undamaged and boxed condition. Moving from Cabin to Check-In, Original to Essential or any other size or collection is not that exchange. The buyer must return the first item and place a separate order. That creates stock risk and, for a time, two charges against the card.

Eligible refunds go to the original payment method. The published estimate is about 10–14 business days between receipt and validation, after which the bank or payment provider can add its own time. A replacement should therefore be ordered only with enough available credit to tolerate an overlap. If the original colour was scarce, ask Client Services what the exchange path actually reserves; returning first and hoping the alternative survives is not a stock strategy.

Our verdict is blunt: if there is meaningful doubt, do not travel with the case. Preserve it, use the prescribed route and document every handoff. Once it has been checked on a flight, the relevant question is more likely repair, carrier damage or guarantee—not a change-of-mind return. Mandatory consumer rights can sit alongside the commercial policy and vary by jurisdiction, especially for defects, but they do not make careless use a sensible way to test a luxury suitcase.

  • Contact Client Services for a same-model colour exchange within the stated period.
  • Budget for overlapping card balances when changing size or collection.
  • Separate a defect remedy from a discretionary return of unused merchandise.

Frequently asked questions

Can an online RIMOWA be returned to a store?
Not under the current US FAQ. Online merchandise must use the online declaration and prepaid UPS route, while store purchases are handled through stores.
How long is the limited-edition return window?
RIMOWA's US policy states 14 days from receipt, compared with 30 days for standard eligible products, and still requires complete, unused and undamaged merchandise.
Can I exchange a Cabin for a Check-In suitcase?
That is a size change, so the current procedure is to return the Cabin and place a new order. Only a same-product colour change is described as an exchange.
