The Lightest RIMOWA at Every Useful Size

RIMOWA's US product matrices reviewed 16 July 2026 place the standard Cabin cases close in volume—35 to 37 litres—but far apart in weight. Original and Classic are both 4.3 kg; Hybrid is 3.8 kg; Essential is 3.2 kg; Essential Lite is 2.2 kg. Lite therefore supplies 37 L at almost half the empty mass of Original, although its shell is two centimetres narrower.

That difference becomes stark under a 7 kg rule. Original and Classic leave 2.7 kg for contents, Hybrid 3.2 kg, Essential 3.8 kg and Lite 4.8 kg. Under 8 kg, each gains one kilogram but the ranking is unchanged. If a carrier weighs cabin luggage routinely, buying aluminium and then packing less than three kilograms inside it is a choice about material pleasure, not packing efficiency.

Essential Lite has no medium checked case, which makes Essential Check-In M the lightest current option in this role. It weighs 4.1 kg, measures 67.5 x 44.5 x 24 cm and holds 60 L. Hybrid follows at 4.9 kg and 62 L, Classic at 5.3 kg and 61 L, and Original at 5.4 kg and 60 L. The volume spread is only two litres; the weight spread is 1.3 kg.

For a 23 kg allowance, Essential leaves 18.9 kg for contents, Hybrid 18.1 kg, Classic 17.7 kg and Original 17.6 kg. More importantly, Essential's 136 cm dimension sum and Hybrid's 137 cm sit well inside the familiar 158 cm reference. Medium is the sensible checked class for solo travel because it is difficult to reach airline weight limits accidentally and easier to move through stations and small rooms.

The large checked group contains the most useful like-for-like comparison. Essential Lite Check-In L weighs 3.7 kg and holds 81 L; Essential weighs 4.8 kg and holds 85 L; Hybrid 5.9 kg and 84 L; Classic 6 kg and 84 L; Original 6.2 kg and 86 L. Lite gives up between three and five litres but saves 1.1 to 2.5 kg.

At 23 kg, the resulting payloads are 19.3 kg for Lite, 18.2 kg for Essential, 17.1 kg for Hybrid, 17 kg for Classic and 16.8 kg for Original. Dense packing strongly favours Lite. Bulky, light packing makes Essential a better balance because its extra four litres cost 1.1 kg. Original carries the most listed volume, but one additional litre over Essential is poor compensation for 1.4 kg of extra shell if weight is the governing concern.

Trunk naming is less uniform, so dimensions matter. Essential Trunk is 5.1 kg and 89 L at a 151 cm sum; Original Trunk is 6.1 kg and 90 L at 153.5 cm; Classic Trunk is 6 kg and 100 L at exactly 158 cm. Among Plus models, Essential is 5.4 kg and 101 L at 158 cm, Hybrid 6.4 kg and 101 L at 161 cm, and Original 6.4 kg and 105 L at 160.5 cm.

Essential Trunk Plus is the numerical winner: it uses the common 158 cm envelope, leaves 17.6 kg under a 23 kg allowance and supplies 101 L. Classic Trunk is the efficient aluminium alternative at 100 L and 6 kg. Original remains the emotional choice, while Hybrid Trunk Plus is hard to justify on weight or dimension sum unless its specific latch-frame-and-polycarbonate construction is the goal.
