RIMOWA Lock Not Opening? Diagnose Pressure before Hardware

Place the case flat on a stable surface with the closure facing up. Bring each known digit to the exact centre of its window, looking straight down rather than from an angle. Move every dial one number away and back to feel it settle. Confirm that no strap, fabric or zipper pull is twisted into the release and that the telescopic handle is fully retracted.

Apply gentle downward pressure to the shell immediately beside the reluctant lock while operating its release. The pressure should bring the case halves together and remove tension from the mechanism; it should not bend the panel. If the release moves when pressure is relieved, the lock may be healthy and the packing load too tall. Repack before closing again.

• Centre every digit on the index line and view the dials squarely.
• Place the case level, retract the handle and clear fabric or pullers from the mechanism.
• Press shells together gently near the lock to remove load; never pry them apart against a loaded latch.

For Original and Hybrid with the correct code, RIMOWA's current stuck-suitcase guide says to open the locks at both corners and lift the top shell. If it remains caught, hold the corner next to a wheel and lift the shell there. This changes the opening angle without introducing a tool between the aluminium frame surfaces.

For Classic, RIMOWA first tells owners to centre all three dials. Apply pressure to the top shell above one lock and pull its button, then repeat with the second. Open the top shell from each corner. Classic's sliding releases and leather details differ from Original, so do not transfer force or direction from one mechanism to the other.

• Original and Hybrid: release both corner locks, then lift the shell; if caught, begin at a corner beside a wheel.
• Classic: centre the digits, press above each lock while pulling its release, then lift from both corners.
• Stop if a latch remains engaged, the frame has a visible gap or lifting requires leverage.

When Essential or Essential Lite is overfilled, the zipper pullers can pull sideways against the lock. Press the two shell edges towards one another near the lock while holding the pullers in their natural line, then operate the release at the known centred code. If it opens, remove contents until the zipper closes around the full case without strain.

If the release operates but a puller remains captured, stop pulling on the zipper tape. Photograph the position and contact service. If the zipper opens away from the lock but separates behind a slider, the problem is in the zipper rather than the combination mechanism. Do not run the slider repeatedly across separated teeth or apply oil, wax or household lubricant.

• Unload sideways force by pressing shell edges together and aligning both pullers naturally.
• If the lock releases but the puller does not, preserve the position rather than yanking the zipper tape.
• A separating zipper behind the slider is a closure repair, not a forgotten-code problem.

These checks apply when the owner knows the combination. They do not decode an unknown code or provide a master key. RIMOWA integrated locks are TSA-compatible so authorised screening agencies can inspect luggage; that access is not an owner recovery method. Bring the serial number, proof of purchase and identification to Client Care or a store for case-specific help.

Also stop when the release is bent, the frame no longer meets, a lock moves in its mounting or a tool seems necessary. Drilling, prying and improvised key use can damage the case, defeat later security and obscure whether airline impact or a component fault caused the problem. Photograph the closed case and exact failure before transport or repair.

• Support file: serial number, proof of purchase, known or unknown code status and photographs of alignment.
• Immediate stop: bent latch, displaced frame, loose lock body, torn zipper tape or need for a tool.
• After opening: remove excess contents and test the empty case several times before returning it to travel.
