Test the mechanism before debating the mark
Keep the baggage tag attached and photograph the case from all sides before leaving reclaim. Record a close view of the impact and a wider view showing where it sits. Then place the empty or normally packed case on level ground: roll each wheel, extend and retract the handle, operate every latch or the full zipper path, and look along the frame or shell for a new gap.
A shallow panel dent can look dramatic while leaving every function intact. A modest corner impact can be more serious if it moves a latch by a few millimetres. Film failed movement rather than relying on a still image: a wheel that binds under load, a handle that collapses or a frame that springs apart is clearer evidence than an adjective such as 'badly damaged'. Report the problem through the airline's channel before cleaning.

Patina is real, but it is not a diagnosis
RIMOWA says deep dents and scratches in aluminium cannot be removed and describes them as the case's patina. Its guarantee excludes cosmetic wear and tear, misuse and abuse. A surface line, shallow depression or finish transfer with normal operation therefore belongs to appearance, not necessarily repair. Plain water may remove residue; it will not reverse displaced metal.
The word patina should not be used to dismiss an impact without testing the surrounding hardware. A dent near the centre of an aluminium panel is usually less consequential than one that reaches a frame edge, hinge, latch seat or wheel corner. On polycarbonate, a scuff differs from stress whitening or a crack. Describe location, depth and function rather than asking whether all dents are normal.

A case can still be visually impressive and functionally unfit; it can also look battered and travel perfectly.
For eligible new suitcases purchased from 25 July 2022, RIMOWA publishes lifetime coverage for functional aspects during the lifespan of the suitcase, excluding cosmetic wear, misuse and abuse. Earlier purchases have different terms. Coverage is not automatic approval of every impact: RIMOWA assesses the defect, and airline handling may place responsibility with the carrier rather than the manufacturer.
- Closure failure: frame gap, latch misalignment, separated zipper or lock that will not operate normally.
- Mobility failure: flat-spotted, detached or binding wheel; telescopic handle that jams or collapses.
- Protection failure: crack, opening or deformation that exposes contents or prevents ordinary loading.
Choose the claim route before the repair route
When damage appears after a flight, create the airline report and retain its reference before arranging work. Ask RIMOWA for an assessment or estimate using the serial number, whole-case photographs, close-ups and a description of the failed function. That document can support an airline or insurance claim while keeping manufacturer coverage questions separate.
Do not hammer an aluminium panel, warm and push polycarbonate, apply glue, drill a lock or lubricate the case with a household spray. A successful-looking home correction can hide the original failure, change alignment elsewhere and complicate liability. Cosmetic patina asks for acceptance; functional damage asks for evidence and qualified repair. Confusing the two is expensive in both directions.
