RIMOWA Compact or Pilot? Two Very Different Mobile Offices

Original Compact is 40.5 x 41.5 x 23 cm, 4.3 kg and 29 L. Pilot is 42 x 50 x 23 cm, 4.9 kg and 31 L. Pilot adds two litres but spreads them laterally: it is 8.5 cm wider and only 1.5 cm taller. Both are 23 cm deep. The 600 g weight gap is modest on the floor and significant if an airline applies a 7 kg total cabin cap.

Compact's near-square face fits more readily beside a desk, in a lift or behind a car seat. Pilot's broad top creates the access aperture that makes the design useful, but the same 50 cm width conflicts with many 35–45 cm airline limits. Rotating it does not remove the over-limit side. If flying is central, compare each physical side rather than trusting RIMOWA's business-travel context.

Pilot's lid opens from the top, exposing a removable padded pouch for a laptop up to 16 inches, two zipped pockets for chargers and batteries, and a vertical pocket for a small bottle or compact umbrella. The case can remain upright beside a worktable while its contents are reached. For photographers, stylists, technicians or executives moving between rooms, that changes the working day more than another internal divider would.

The design is less persuasive as a simple overnight case. Its wide body consumes lateral space, its 4.9 kg empty weight leaves only 2.1 kg under a 7 kg cap, and the structured pockets are useful only when they have assigned contents. Buy Pilot because it will be opened ten times before check-in, not because its shape looks distinctive in a departure lounge.

• Weak point: unusual 50 cm width and a specialised interior that can be wasted on ordinary clothing.

Compact opens like a small conventional case. Its removable accordion organiser provides multiple pockets and padded laptop space up to 16 inches; lift the unit out and the aluminium shell becomes an open 29-litre case. That conversion suits someone who wheels work material during the week and packs one or two outfits for an overnight trip without wanting two separate cases.

Side opening requires floor or desk space and is slower for a single document than Pilot's top lid. In exchange, the case has fewer task-specific cavities and a 41.5 cm width that is easier to accommodate. At 4.3 kg it is still heavy for its volume, so its best territory is ground movement, generous cabin policies and owners who genuinely use the removable insert in both modes.

• Payload at 7 kg: 2.7 kg, 600 g more than Pilot leaves under the same limit.
• Weak point: the whole case must be opened to retrieve most contents, demanding a stable horizontal surface.

Pilot is the better work object when upright access is used throughout the day. Compact is the better single purchase when the owner alternates between documents and a short wardrobe. For most travellers who simply want a cabin case with a laptop, neither is ideal: a standard Cabin plus a slim personal item is lighter in use, easier to pass through airline sizers and less disruptive when the computer is needed at security.

Rehearse the actual commute before buying. Load the real laptop and charger, place the usual tote on the handle, wheel the case through a doorway and imagine storing it under a desk. The correct answer becomes obvious when the case performs a day of work rather than an abstract comparison. Pilot is a cabinet on wheels; Compact is a convertible briefcase. Choose the job first.
