What RIMOWA's Litres Actually Buy You

The standard Cabin class is tightly grouped: Original 35 L, Classic 36 L, Essential 36 L, Hybrid 37 L and Essential Lite 37 L. Their external dimensions are similarly close, with all at 55 cm high and 23 cm deep; widths range from Lite's 37 cm to Original, Classic and Hybrid at 40 cm. On paper, none offers a capacity breakthrough.

Weight produces the useful distinction. Lite supplies its 37 L at 2.2 kg, Essential 36 L at 3.2 kg, Hybrid 37 L at 3.8 kg, and Original 35 L at 4.3 kg. A traveller subject to a 7 kg cap can place 4.8 kg inside Lite but only 2.7 kg inside Original. Choose Cabin capacity by the load the airline lets you carry, not by the largest litre figure printed beside the product.

Empty weight ranges from 4.1 kg for Essential to 5.4 kg for Original, a difference that matters more than Hybrid's two-litre advantage.

Sixty litres is large enough for a considered week or a longer warm-weather trip, yet small enough to lift into a car without turning every transfer into a project. It also discourages the false confidence created by an 85-litre shell. For one traveller who can edit, Check-In M is usually the best RIMOWA capacity—especially when the itinerary includes trains, stairs or compact hotel rooms.

A Check-In case presents flatter layers; a Trunk creates a deeper well for boots, coats and awkward objects.

Under 23 kg, the lightest large case—Essential Lite at 3.7 kg—leaves 19.3 kg for contents. Original Check-In L at 6.2 kg leaves 16.8 kg. Both volumes can accept more clothing than those payloads allow, particularly in winter. A useful packing test is therefore physical and numerical: load the actual shoes, toiletries and equipment, close without strain, then weigh before filling the remaining gaps.

Original Trunk XL reaches 130 L and a 167.5 cm sum in the US size module. The extra 25 litres over Original Trunk Plus adds only 400 g, yet it creates a much deeper 44 cm case.

These are not simply longer-trip sizes. They are different transport objects. A 130-litre case can be awkward in a saloon-car boot, on a luggage rack or in a small room, and its capacity invites an overweight load. Buy above 100 L only after checking the largest item, the car and train portions of the itinerary, the airline's hard maximum and the person who will lift it.
