How to Clean a Polycarbonate RIMOWA without Clouding the Shell

Place the empty case under broad light and remove dust from the grooves, zipper edge and wheel recesses. A dark rubber transfer usually sits on the surface and may change when wiped with water. A scratch remains as a fine physical line. Stress whitening appears as a pale area within the plastic where it has flexed, while a crack forms an edge that may spread under pressure.

Do not flex the shell repeatedly to diagnose it. Photograph anything structural, including the surrounding panel and the case as a whole, then test the zipper, handle and wheels without loading the case. On Hybrid, also inspect the aluminium corner pieces, frame and latch alignment. A clean panel can coexist with a frame that was distorted in handling.

• Surface transfer: sits above the finish and may respond to several gentle water-only passes.
• Stress or structural damage: whitening, a sharp crease, spreading split or changed closure alignment.
• Evidence first: photograph fresh airline damage before water, rubbing or repair changes the appearance.

Wet a clean soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge with plain water and wring it thoroughly. Work from the cleanest area towards the dirtiest, using broad light strokes rather than fast circles. Rinse or turn the cloth whenever it collects dark residue. A gloss shell reveals fine swirls easily; a matte shell can acquire a local sheen when friction repeatedly concentrates on one mark.

Follow with a second clean damp cloth, then dry with soft fabric that has no grit or rough seam. Wipe around the zipper tape without soaking it and keep water out of lock openings, handle tubes and wheel bearings. Leave the case open at room temperature until the interior and seams are fully dry. Never accelerate drying with a heater or direct sun.

• Use plain water, a soft light-coloured cloth and pressure no greater than an ordinary wipe.
• Clean the entire panel evenly rather than polishing one scuff until its texture changes.
• Air-dry open at room temperature and away from direct heat or intense sunlight.

RIMOWA advises against scouring detergents, abrasive cloths and sponges, window-cleaning agents, vinegar-based cleaners, disinfectants, solvents, dilutions, aggressive alcohols, petroleum distillates and nail-polish remover. The list matters because polycarbonate can haze, craze or change surface texture after chemical attack even when the first wipe appears successful.

Household ingenuity adds other risks. A magic eraser abrades; automotive compound polishes; adhesive remover introduces solvent; a hair dryer concentrates heat; and boiling water can deform material. None repairs a crack. When clean water does not move a mark and the appearance matters, send well-lit photographs and the serial number to RIMOWA rather than escalating the chemistry.

• No window spray, vinegar, disinfectant, acetone, solvent or aggressive alcohol.
• No scouring pad, magic eraser, polishing compound or powered buffer.
• No heat gun, hair dryer, boiling water, glue or home reshaping for a damaged shell.

Hybrid's broad exterior is polycarbonate, while RIMOWA identifies anodised aluminium at the corners and uses a rigid frame with latches. Plain water and a non-abrasive cloth suit both primary surfaces, but the inspection differs. A panel can flex without preventing travel; a small change at an aluminium corner can disturb the geometry of the frame and stop a latch from meeting.

After cleaning, close the empty case on a level surface. Both halves should meet without pressure and each latch should operate normally. Roll every wheel and extend the handle. If function is intact, ordinary scuffs belong to ownership. If the frame gaps, a latch resists, a crack opens or a wheel mount moves in the shell, stop cleaning and begin a documented repair request.
