The house is Otto Kolb's personal manifesto

Kolb returned to Switzerland after teaching design in Chicago and earning commercial success from a modular prefabricated staircase patented in 1965. The stair appears in his own house, but more importantly its production shaped the building: metal left from the factory was folded into a one-off domestic structure.

Built between 1980 and 1982 in Wermatswil in the Zurich Oberland, the villa gathers Kolb's interests in Japanese art, organic architecture and industrial construction. RIMOWA's story refers simply to Kolb, which likely enabled the earlier copy to drift into incorrect first names. The independent architectural record identifies Otto Kolb.

02Environmental design

Round form, reused matter and collected water

The cylindrical perimeter has fewer external corners than a comparable rectilinear enclosure, reducing some thermal bridging and surface complexity. Stone from the excavation remained on site, while folded metal offcuts became construction material. At the centre, a large cistern gathers rainwater from the roof.

RIMOWA describes that water moving through the fire-grate to support the heating system, with ponds and floating walkways extending the circulation of water into the landscape. The open plan makes those systems spatially visible rather than hiding sustainability behind equipment labels. It is a total environment, not a catalogue of green products.

03Critical verdict

Pioneering does not mean high-performing by today's measure

In 1982, combining industrial reuse, rainwater and energy-conscious form in a private house was unusual. Contemporary sustainability assessment would also ask about insulation, airtightness, embodied carbon, system efficiency and measured consumption—data the RIMOWA feature does not provide.

Our verdict: Villa Kolb deserves attention for making environmental thinking inseparable from form and daily life.
