RIMOWA Original Bag 16 vs 19: The Smaller Case Saves 2.7 cm and 100 g

Bag 16 is 16.3 cm high, 23.5 cm wide and 8.8 cm deep. Bag 19 is 18.7 × 26.2 × 8.8 cm. The shared depth means the smaller case does not sit dramatically flatter against the body; it trims the visible rectangle and the length of objects that can lie inside.

Weight changes from 1.1 kg to 1.0 kg, so 16 is not a lightweight alternative. Both are rigid aluminium boxes with leather interiors and hardware. The meaningful question is whether a phone, wallet, keys, small power bank and glasses fit without stacking awkwardly. If the kit routinely includes a large glasses case or camera, 19's extra width is useful.

Both sizes provide two open compartments, one zipped compartment and a full-grain leather interior. Bag 16 has three card slots; Bag 19 has four. Each uses a liftable leather-wrapped top handle, mechanical lock and removable nylon webbing strap for hand, shoulder or cross-body carry.

The shell will not stretch around an overfilled pouch, and the latch requires contents to sit below the closing line. That makes object dimensions more important than headline volume. Independent bag publication Bagaholicboy framed 16's realistic load as a phone, wallet, keys and earbuds—not a full workday carry. The rigid case protects against crushing but can knock against the hip and weighs far more than a leather bag of similar capacity.

RIMOWA launched Bag 16 at €1,700 in permanent Silver, Black and Titanium. The US product page later listed $2,200 and a two-year warranty; market pricing changes independently. Bag 19 remains the established larger option in Silver and Black, with the same two-year product-warranty category.

Our verdict: 16 is the better design because the compact proportions make the hard-shell idea feel intentional. It is not a value or weight upgrade. Choose 19 if the objects you carry need its 2.7 cm of extra width; choose 16 if editing the load is part of the appeal. Anyone wanting flexible capacity should skip both.
