RIMOWA's Frankfurt Guide Still Works When You Strip Out the Expiry Dates

The guide answers Frankfurt's transit-city reputation with residents and cultural workers rather than a countdown of landmarks. Photographer Marc Krause's project record names Susanne Pfeffer, Mahret Ifeoma Kupka, Michael Satter, Teimaz Shahverdi, GG Vybe and On Film Lab. Their presence locates the city in contemporary art, music, photography and everyday neighbourhood life instead of treating the skyline as the whole identity.

Simon Menges photographed the architecture, while the recommendations move across districts and categories. That editorial structure is worth preserving exactly as a December 2023 document. What should not survive unchanged are opening hours, reservation links, menus and the operating status of small businesses. An archive becomes misleading the moment an old address is silently polished to look current.

Begin in Westend at Palmengarten, whose 22 hectares and global plant collections are confirmed by the current city visitor record. Continue toward the centre for Kleinmarkthalle and its market culture, then cross or follow the Main toward the Museumsufer. Städel offers the broad art-historical collection; contemporary programmes at MMK and other institutions depend on the exhibition calendar rather than the old guide's descriptions.

This route preserves the PDF's productive contrasts: controlled tropical climate, food commerce, dense city and museums along the river. It also leaves room for failure. A greenhouse may close, a market stall may rest and a museum may be between exhibitions. The appropriate response is a same-week check on the venue's own site, not a paragraph claiming every 2023 pick was ‘verified’ once for all of 2026.

The guide's best line of thought is that Frankfurt's airport, trade-fair and banking infrastructure obscure a city of strong neighbourhoods. Current official tourism material still makes that case through Westend and Bockenheim, the museum embankment, markets and the East End. Stable institutions give a first-time visitor a reliable skeleton without pretending that urban life can be frozen.

Our verdict: download the original for its people and photography, but do not use it as an operating manual. A current guide should stamp every time-sensitive claim with a review date and link directly to the venue. If you have one day, Palmengarten plus one market and one museum is more honest—and more enjoyable—than racing through every old recommendation for completeness.
