Bauhaus Dessau Was Designed by an Office Before the School Taught Architecture
Gropius led the famous school building, but Carl Fieger, Ernst Neufert, Otto Meyer-Ottens, Bernhard Sturtzkopf and Hinnerk Scheper make the lone-genius version untenable.
Quick answer
The Bauhaus Building opened in Dessau on 4 December 1926, but the school did not establish its architecture department until 1927. Planning therefore came from Walter Gropius's private office, with major participation by Carl Fieger, Ernst Neufert, Otto Meyer-Ottens and Bernhard Sturtzkopf. Hinnerk Scheper's mural workshop developed the colour scheme. The famous glass workshop façade is one part of a connected teaching and living system, not a lone-master sculpture.
The school building came from a collaborative private practice
‘Designed by Walter Gropius’ is a useful shorthand and an incomplete production record. Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau names major participation by Carl Fieger, Ernst Neufert, Otto Meyer-Ottens and Bernhard Sturtzkopf in Gropius's office. The timing explains why: when the project was planned in 1925–26, Bauhaus had workshops in many disciplines but no architecture department of its own.
That fact does not remove Gropius's leadership; it relocates invention inside an office and a city commission. Interior fittings and visual systems then drew on Bauhaus workshops. Hinnerk Scheper's mural-painting workshop developed the colour scheme, using tones to orient movement and differentiate surfaces. A building associated with collective education should not be narrated through collective erasure.
- Design lead: Walter Gropius's private office
- Named associates: Fieger, Neufert, Meyer-Ottens and Sturtzkopf
Different functions remain visible instead of hiding behind one façade
The workshop wing's suspended glass skin made structure and activity visible and produced the photograph that now stands for the whole building. Yet the plan is deliberately asymmetrical. A bridge carries administration across the street; other volumes accommodate teaching, stage and canteen functions, while the studio building houses compact rooms. Circulation reveals how the parts depend on one another without forcing them into a monumental front.
Typography, furniture, hardware and Scheper's colour system extend the architecture into use. Even the glass façade is not simple transparency: reflections obscure work by day and the illuminated interior changes character after dark. The building's achievement lies in coordinating specialised environments for making, teaching, eating, performing and living. One clean exterior view suppresses the busy institution it was designed to support.
- Opening: 4 December 1926
- Spatial idea: distinct functional wings connected into one school complex
UNESCO status protects a layered history, not a perfect origin
The Bauhaus's Dessau period ended under political pressure, and the building passed through hostile reuse, damage, repair and reconstruction before World Heritage inscription in 1996. Today's foundation interprets that history and manages visits, exhibitions and even accommodation programmes. RIMOWA's November 2023 feature cannot supply a current ticket, tour or access schedule.
Our verdict: start at the glass workshop façade, then spend your attention on the bridge, colour, handles, stair landings and relations between wings. Name the office collaborators whenever space permits. The most Bauhaus-appropriate reading treats architecture as coordinated labour and changing use—not a spotless white monument authored by one famous man.
- Best way to understand it: follow one day's functions through the connected wings
- Myth to retire: Gropius independently designed every element
