RIMOWA RE-CRAFTED Is Two Different Decisions

A practical account of selling an old aluminium suitcase into RIMOWA RE-CRAFTED and buying a reconditioned drop, with current US limits and guarantee terms.

Quick answer

RE-CRAFTED is not a conventional trade-in quote or a permanent used-luggage store. In the US programme reviewed July 16, 2026, authentic wheeled aluminium RIMOWA suitcases can be submitted at participating stores regardless of age or condition, subject to authentication and a limit of two per household per year. The personalised store voucher lasts three years, only one may be used per purchase and the US FAQ states a $600 pre-tax minimum purchase. Reconditioned cases are sold online in drops and carry a two-year manufacturer's guarantee—not the lifetime guarantee on qualifying new wheeled suitcases.

Submission is limited to authentic wheeled aluminium RIMOWA, not every product bearing the logo.
The US programme caps participation at two suitcases per household and year.
The voucher is personal, valid for three years and subject to a $600 pre-tax use floor.
A purchased RE-CRAFTED case carries a two-year manufacturer's guarantee and visible history.
01Submitting a case

The oldest dented aluminium case may qualify; the pristine polycarbonate one will not

RIMOWA's US FAQ defines eligibility by construction and identity rather than prettiness: authentic aluminium suitcases equipped with wheels can enter the programme regardless of age or condition. That opens the door to heavily travelled two-wheel and multiwheel cases, but excludes polycarbonate luggage, bags and aluminium objects without the required wheeled-suitcase form. Do not pay for cosmetic restoration merely to seek admission; let the participating store determine whether the case fits the programme and passes authentication.

Bring the original invoice when available and valid identification. RIMOWA says an advisor can authenticate a case when the invoice is gone, while ID is used to check the participation quota. The US cap is two suitcases per household at the same address per year. Contact the listed participating store before transporting a large case, ask whether submissions require an appointment and confirm that the programme terms displayed for the US apply to that branch on the planned date.

A voucher is not cash, and that distinction determines whether surrendering the suitcase is sensible. Ask the advisor to state the voucher amount and all redemption terms before the handover becomes final. Compare it with a realistic private-sale net price after platform fees, shipping, fraud risk and the value of the time required to sell. A rare vintage configuration may deserve specialist resale; a bulky damaged case with little private demand can be much better suited to RE-CRAFTED.

  • Screen first for authentic aluminium construction and wheels, not cosmetic condition.
  • Bring invoice and ID, and confirm the household's remaining annual quota.
  • Compare voucher utility with the after-fee, after-effort value of a private sale.
02The voucher

Three years sounds generous until the next purchase is hypothetical

The current US voucher lasts three years from issue, is personalised and cannot be transferred. Only one voucher may be redeemed per purchase, and the FAQ sets a $600 pre-tax minimum amount for the purchase on which it is used. Those constraints are manageable for someone already planning another RIMOWA; they are real discounts to the voucher's value for someone merely clearing storage. A household cannot combine several submissions into an unrestricted cash balance for family and friends.

Work a simple example. Suppose an owner expects to buy a qualifying $1,250 pre-tax case within the next year and receives a voucher whose value meaningfully reduces that purchase. The floor is no problem and the voucher replaces spending already planned. If the owner wants only a small accessory, the $600 minimum blocks that use; if a partner intends to redeem it, personalisation blocks the transfer; if no purchase occurs within three years, the nominal value expires unused. Utility, not the printed amount, is the true consideration.

Before accepting, ask whether the voucher can be used on the desired category, in which participating stores, with which exclusions and alongside any other offer. Save a photograph or digital copy and the issue receipt; RIMOWA directs owners who lose a voucher to a store or Client Care, but a clear record makes recovery easier. Also note the household and purchaser names consistently, since identity is part of both quota and redemption.

  • Discount the voucher sharply when no qualifying RIMOWA purchase is already planned.
  • Remember the three-year expiry, single-voucher limit and $600 pre-tax floor.
  • Keep issue evidence because the credit is personal rather than freely transferable.
03Buying a case

A RE-CRAFTED drop sells condition and history, not new-case uniformity

Reconditioned cases appear online by drop rather than as a stable catalogue. Buyers should subscribe through the official page, decide acceptable sizes and eras beforehand and inspect each listing's photographs and description. Reconditioning is not erasure: dents, patina and model-specific features are the point for some buyers and a disappointment for others. Compare the exact case, not a generic promise that every pre-loved shell will look like a lightly handled display item.

Coverage also differs. RIMOWA's guarantee FAQ gives RE-CRAFTED products a two-year manufacturer's guarantee, while qualifying new wheeled suitcases purchased from July 25, 2022 receive the lifetime framework for functional aspects. That gap should enter the price comparison along with condition and rarity. A pre-owned aluminium case can be desirable for design history and avoided new production, but it is not automatically the financially superior choice at a small discount.

Our verdict: submit a case when it is eligible, hard to sell well and the household expects a qualifying purchase within three years. Buy RE-CRAFTED when the individual patina or discontinued specification is part of the appeal and the two-year coverage is acceptable. Buyers seeking an immaculate shell, a particular current colour or maximum guarantee simplicity should buy new. Circularity is strongest when the old case genuinely returns to use—not when the voucher merely prompts an unnecessary replacement.

  • Judge each drop by its own photographs, measurements, condition and included components.
  • Price the two-year guarantee difference against an equivalent qualifying new suitcase.
  • Buy because the individual case is desirable, not because second-hand is automatically virtuous.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit a polycarbonate RIMOWA to RE-CRAFTED?
No under the current US eligibility wording. The programme accepts authentic aluminium RIMOWA suitcases equipped with wheels, regardless of their age or condition.
How long does a RE-CRAFTED voucher last?
The US FAQ states three years from issue. It is personalised, only one may be used per purchase and the purchase must meet the stated $600 pre-tax minimum.
Do RE-CRAFTED suitcases get the lifetime guarantee?
No. RIMOWA currently assigns RE-CRAFTED products a two-year manufacturer's guarantee, so buyers should compare coverage as well as purchase price and patina.
